Keepa + what? Building the minimal viable data stack

Keepa covers history better than almost anything else in the Amazon seller stack. The real question is what — if anything — you need to add before that history becomes a reliable buying decision.

Updated October 12, 2026 · Product data and pricing checked manually

What should you add to Keepa?

Add one decision layer that matches your business model. For arbitrage and wholesale sourcing, that is usually SellerAmp. For private-label validation, Mettra is the more interesting addition. Add a profit tracker only after products are live.

Ask experienced sellers which subscription they would keep if forced to choose one and Keepa appears again and again. The reason is simple: a seller can replace a calculator, a dashboard or a keyword interface. Reconstructing years of price, rank, Buy Box and offer history is much harder.

But history is evidence, not a decision. Keepa can show that a price collapsed three times last year. It cannot know your supplier terms, prep costs, VAT treatment, advertising assumptions, cash constraints or required return. The minimal viable stack is therefore not “Keepa plus more data.” It is Keepa plus a disciplined way to interpret the data.

1

Evidence

Keepa shows what happened: price, rank, offers, seasonality and Buy Box movement.

2

Decision

SellerAmp or Mettra applies costs, risk rules and a repeatable go/no-go framework.

3

Operation

A profit tracker reconciles what actually happened after stock, ads, fees and returns arrive.

What does Keepa actually cover?

Keepa is the historical truth layer for Amazon product, price, rank, offer and seller data. It is strongest when the question begins with “what changed?” or “is this pattern normal?”

Keepa is strong at

Market history

Price movement, sales-rank patterns, Buy Box behavior, offer counts, seller history, stock signals, deals, category data and product tracking.

Keepa does not know

Your economics

Landed cost, prep fees, tax treatment, financing, target margin, ad budget, launch inventory, return assumptions and opportunity cost.

In 2026, Keepa also offers a documented REST API and an official hosted MCP server. That makes its data easier to move into scripts and AI assistants, but the same caveat remains: better access to raw evidence does not automatically create better judgment. An agent can read the chart; it still needs your decision rules.

What is missing from Keepa?

Keepa is missing the seller-specific layer that converts an attractive chart into a safe purchase quantity. The missing fields differ by model, which is why the right add-on for arbitrage is not the right add-on for private label.

  • Eligibility and restriction riskCan your account sell the ASIN, brand and condition before you buy it?
  • Complete unit economicsWhat remains after Amazon fees, inbound shipping, prep, tax, returns and advertising?
  • Capital exposureHow much cash is tied up, for how long, and what happens if price or velocity falls?
  • Decision consistencyWould two team members reach the same answer from the same product data?
  • Actual post-launch profitDid the product earn the projected margin after real fees, ads, storage and refunds?

What should arbitrage sellers use with Keepa?

For retail arbitrage, online arbitrage and wholesale deal analysis, the cleanest pairing is Keepa plus SellerAmp. Keepa explains the listing’s history; SellerAmp turns the current offer into a fast sourcing decision.

SellerAmp SAS adds the fields an arbitrage buyer needs at the point of purchase: fee-aware profit, ROI, break-even price, eligibility, IP alerts, Buy Box analysis, estimated sales, offer-level competition and maximum cost. It works across a browser extension, web app and mobile app, which matters when sourcing happens both on retail sites and in physical stores.

The distinction is important. Keepa might show a stable $29.99 Buy Box over twelve months. SellerAmp asks whether a specific seller can buy at $11.50, prep the item, pay inbound freight, survive a price drop and still meet a 30% ROI rule. One tool supplies context; the other applies the buying rule.

Current published SellerAmp pricing: Getting Started is $19.95/month, Getting Serious is $29.95/month and Going Pro is $49.95/month. All plans include the core calculator, eligibility and IP checks, charts, Buy Box analysis and access across extension, web and mobile; higher tiers primarily expand usage and team capacity.

What this pairing does not solve is perfect variation-level demand. Seller discussions continue to flag cases where parent-level estimates and review-share assumptions produce misleading child-ASIN velocity. For variation-heavy listings, inspect the child offer history and treat any single sales estimate as a range, not a fact.

What should private-label sellers use with Keepa?

For private-label validation, Keepa plus Mettra is the most interesting lean stack to watch. Keepa shows whether the niche has durable demand and rational pricing; Mettra turns the opportunity into a structured financial and competitive decision.

Mettra is not a replacement for Keepa’s long historical record. Its value is the layer above it: niche analysis, competitor comparison, profitability scenarios, break-even price, investment requirement, payback period and product tracking in one workflow.

That matters because the most dangerous private-label spreadsheet errors are not complicated formulas. They are omitted assumptions: launch PPC, freight, storage, returns, duties, discounts, price compression and the amount of capital required before the first reorder. Mettra’s structured financial model forces those assumptions into the same decision.

Keepa asks

Is the market real?

Are prices stable? Is demand seasonal? Did rank improve only during discounts? Are new sellers compressing the Buy Box?

Mettra asks

Does the investment work?

What margin survives? How much capital is required? What is the payback period? Which assumption breaks the launch?

Mettra’s Pro plan is listed at $66/month billed yearly and includes the extension, structured financial model, product tracker, niche analysis, keywords and AI tools. Start is $29/month and Corporate is $109/month, also shown as annualized monthly prices. The relevant comparison is not Mettra versus every feature in a large suite; it is Mettra versus the spreadsheet where the investment decision would otherwise be made.

When should you add a profit tracker?

Add a profit tracker when the product starts selling, not while it is still an idea. Keepa and a validation model estimate the future; a tool such as sellerboard reconciles the actual fees, advertising, refunds, storage and cost of goods.

sellerboard starts at $19/month or $15/month billed annually for its Standard plan. It tracks more than headline revenue: Amazon fees, PPC, refunds, inbound costs, storage, variable expenses and SKU-level net profit. This is a different job from research and should remain a separate layer.

A pre-launch model should not be treated as an accounting system. Likewise, a profit dashboard should not be used to validate a niche that has no sales yet. Forecast before buying; reconcile after selling.

What is the smallest useful Amazon seller stack?

The smallest useful stack is Keepa plus one tool for the next irreversible decision. Do not add research, PPC, inventory and AI subscriptions at the same time unless each replaces a real weekly workflow.

Keepa manages Data Access and API pricing inside the customer account, so the table shows the incremental cost on top of Keepa rather than inventing a universal total. Region, tax and billing cycle can change the checkout amount.

What do current user reviews say about this stack?

The product-use signal is stronger than the headline review scores. Keepa is repeatedly described as indispensable by active sourcing users, SellerAmp is valued for speed, and Mettra’s early feedback favors structured analysis — but none of those signals should be read without checking sample size and collection method.

Keepa

Essential data, billing friction

Trustpilot’s score is poor and many complaints concern renewal, cancellation or plan changes. At the same time, active sourcing users continue to describe daily reliance on the underlying history. The service signal and product-utility signal diverge.

SellerAmp

Fast workflow, mixed app experience

Seller communities consistently pair SellerAmp with Keepa for quick deal analysis. Public mobile-store feedback is more mixed, with performance and freezing complaints appearing alongside strong value comments.

Mettra

Promising, still early

G2 showed 5.0/5 from 13 reviews when checked. Users highlighted niche evaluation, financial structure and connected AI context. That is encouraging, but the sample is too small to establish long-term reliability or support quality.

Review rule: use reviews to identify recurring failure modes — billing, stability, support and missing workflows. Do not use a star average as a substitute for testing your own ten ASINs and one real purchase decision.

When should you buy a full Amazon seller suite?

Buy a full suite only when it replaces at least two or three tools your team already uses every week. A long feature list is not a saving if most of the features remain unopened.

A suite becomes rational when product research, keyword tracking, listing workflows, inventory, advertising and multiple user accounts genuinely need to share context. It is usually premature when the business still has one bottleneck: finding deals, validating one launch or understanding profit.

Before moving to Amazon seller suites, ask three questions:

  • Which existing subscriptions will disappear? If the answer is none, the suite is an added cost rather than consolidation.
  • Which workflows need shared data?Integration matters only when research, operations or ads actually depend on one another.
  • Who will own adoption?A suite without a weekly operating routine becomes an expensive dashboard.

What is the minimal viable data stack for Amazon sellers?

Start with Keepa, add one decision tool, and add operational software only after the product is live. For arbitrage that usually means SellerAmp; for private-label validation, Mettra is the dark horse worth watching.

Our take

Start with data. Then add decision structure. Only then consider the heavy suites. Keepa tells you what the market has done. SellerAmp turns that history into a fast arbitrage buy-or-pass decision. Mettra turns it into a private-label investment case. sellerboard verifies whether the forecast survived contact with real fees and advertising. Every additional subscription should answer a question the previous layer cannot — otherwise it is just another dashboard.

Sources and methodology

Capabilities were checked against the official Keepa API documentation, Keepa MCP documentation, SellerAmp pricing page, Mettra pricing page and sellerboard pricing and product page. Review signals were checked on G2, Keepa Trustpilot, Mettra Trustpilot and recent seller discussions. Vendor claims and user feedback were evaluated separately. Prices and ratings are snapshots and can change.
